The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to formally inaugurate its Presidential Campaign Council at its proposed National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for October 20, 2026.
Speaking alongside members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) on Saturday, The National Chairman Senator Cleopas Moses explained that preparations for the campaign council are at an advanced stage, with the party prioritising consultation, careful planning and unity ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Senator Moses disclosed that the party had already developed an organisational structure for its campaign council, which has been submitted to its leadership for consideration. He emphasised that the process requires close consultation with the party’s presidential candidate, Mr Peter Gregory Obi, and vice-presidential candidate, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who will lead the party’s campaign.
According to the National Chairman, the proposed NEC meeting will also provide an opportunity to issue Certificates of Return to the party’s candidates and host a dinner aimed at strengthening cooperation and building synergy among them.
He explained that the timing of the inauguration reflects the importance of making informed decisions, particularly when appointing individuals to key campaign positions.
“We must check characters. It is better to get it right,” Senator Moses said, stressing the need to ensure that those entrusted with strategic responsibilities remain committed to the party and its mission.
Youth at the Centre of NDC’s Vision
The National Chairman also highlighted the importance of young Nigerians to the party’s vision, noting that the youth constitute a significant proportion of the country’s voting population.
He described the NDC as a party committed to building an enduring political institution for the next generation, while acknowledging the importance of experience and guidance from established political leaders.
Senator Moses identified the party’s National Leader, Senator Elisha Akedisi, alongside its presidential and vice-presidential candidates, as key figures whose experience the NWC consults in making important decisions.
He clarified that such consultations should not be interpreted as a lack of competence but as a deliberate effort to ensure sound leadership and effective decision-making.
Party Activities Continue Ahead of Formal Inauguration
Addressing concerns about the pace of the campaign preparations, Senator Moses maintained that the party has remained active through consultations, town hall meetings and engagements with Nigerians across the country.
He cited engagements in locations including Rivers State, Sokoto and Kaduna as part of the party’s efforts to connect with citizens and communicate its vision.
The Chairman added that the formal inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council would mark an important step towards intensifying the party’s campaign activities, with further details of its strategy expected to be unveiled in the coming days.
With preparations continuing and the proposed October 20 NEC meeting approaching, the NDC says it is focused on building a coordinated campaign structure capable of advancing its mission of national rescue and political transformation.
